Willie Thorne support for Molly Olly’s Wishes

Molly Olly’s Wishes was sad to hear of the death of Celebrity Snooker player Willie Thorne in June this year. We have fond memories of when he guested and acted as a auctioneer in support to Molly Olly’s Wishes at a fundraising event in Warwick in 2017. Willie Thorne shared stories of his career past and present, took pictures and answered questions in a witty and generous manner from the guests. It was a wonderful evening with Reuben Lynch as our toast master, a three course meal, live sitar and bhandgra music, and an auction which raised over £1000. We will always be very grateful for his support.

Willie Thorne was a colourful and well respected character in the snooker world, renowned for his good sense of humour. He rose to fame in 1970 after becoming the UK’s Under16s champion. He went on to win the Mercantile Credit Classic in 1985, and in the same year reached the final of the UK championship against Steve Davis. He reached the quarter finals of the World Snooker Championship in 1982 and 1985, ranking No.7 in the snooker world in the 1980s. He turned to presenting and became a popular snooker commentator on both Sky TV and BBC.

Magnolia House at Birmingham Children’s Hospital

Molly Olly’s Wishes were proud to donate £40,000 for the interior design towards Magnolia House at Birmingham Children’s hospital, which is a facility for palliative care, bereavement care and support. Magnolia House is the first of its kind in the UK and is completely funded by charitable donations.

Magnolia House is a calm and peaceful place where the hospital’s specially trained staff meet with children, young people and families to have conversations around life-changing choices and decision making around palliative and end of life care. It is a place which feels safe and kind, where children, young people, parents and carers can spend time out to help them in their journey. There are also opportunities at Magnolia House for children and families to access therapies through play, massage, counselling and other activities.

Before Magnolia House opened, life-changing conversations took place in offices, empty cubicles or even playrooms with parents often moved back out onto the ward before they have time to properly digest the conversation. In Rachel’s words from her family’s experience with Molly “We had tough conversations in public areas and in small consulting rooms that opened on to waiting areas full of other children and their families. We felt trapped by the environment, like we couldn’t breathe, needing to be outside, away from everyone else”.

Nicki Fitzmaurice, Palliative Care Lead at Birmingham Children’s Hospital, said: “The hospital, and the families who come to us, have wanted a space like Magnolia House for such a long time and we are proud, today, to be able to start building this exciting new facility as it will improve the lives of hundreds of families that are delivered devastating news at our hospital every year.”

Molly Olly’s Wishes was able to fund the interior design for the Hospital with the aim of creating a beautiful, safe and comfortable environment for these families dealing with unimaginably difficult situations.

Ollie goes to the moon and back

In May we had the pleasure of completing Ollie’s wish of having a space theme bedroom. Ollie had a beaming smile and “out of this world” expression when he first saw his completed “space” room. Along with his NASA space suit and astronaut helmet, he went to bed happy with his new space pyjamas. He also loved meeting the big Olly the Brave since he had a small Olly the Brave that kept him company at the hospital. The Olly the Brave helped him understand his condition and the changes that his body goes through.

Thank you to all our donors, Steve the decorator and Lee the plaster who made this happen.

TAE17 – Twitter Art Exhibition

The Twitter Art Exhibition originated in Norway by David Sandum in order to fundraise books through art for children after reading that the Moss children’s library were having cuts. As a keen user of Twitter, he contacted artists across social media in order to encourage donations of original postcard sized artwork. He aimed for 140 postcards due to number of characters in a Tweet and it was well exceed with 260 cards. Each exhibition is held in a different city and all the funds will go towards the chosen charity. Past exhibitions have taken place in Norway, New York and Los Angeles.

For the first time the Twitter Art Exhibition came to the UK and Molly Olly’s Wishes was the chosen charity this year, the exhibition will be held in Australia next year.  We received over 1000 artwork from over 65 countries around the world who have submitted original postcard sized artwork that will be for sale at £30 each or 4 for £100. The Art Exhibition took place in the ArtsHouse in Stratford Upon Avon from April 1st – 19th. In support of the event and the charity customers came as far as Boston and Texas during the opening evening of the Twitter Art Exhibition. The remaining original artwork is available at our online store.

Why not get your own original artwork whilst helping a good cause.

A Wish for Zara

In December we received a request for a wish for Zara. Zara had been diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic leukaemia earlier in the year and her wish was to help her have a goal to get her through treatment . She wanted to learn how to show jump so now she has got back her feet and wants to get back in the saddle. Molly Olly’s got her started as, her wish for riding gear which meant she was kitted out with jodhpurs, riding boots, back protector and a warm riding jacket. Thank you to all our donors who helped make this happen.
