72 year old grandad walks with Lord Mayor of Coventry to raise funds for Molly Ollys

Aug 10, 2022 | News

Coventry’s Lord Mayor joined 72-year-old Tony Cunningham’s year-long sponsored walk to raise money for Molly Ollys.

Tony – who’s had a quadruple heart bypass – pledged to walk 10 miles a day every day of 2022 to raise funds for us as he has a big heart and he heard Rachel speak at his old place of work a few years ago and what she said moved him. He also took on the challenge in memory of his late wife of 47 years who lost her battle with lung cancer last year and so far, he’s walked more than 3000 miles and raised over £5,000.

The Lord Mayor, who was joined on the walk by his wife and Lady Mayoress, Angela, said: “Tony is an incredible inspiration. He is there in the park every day, covering 10 miles and chatting to other park users to spread news of Molly Ollys and the great work it does.

“It will be an honour to keep him company for a little while and support his efforts, and to try and do our own bit for some very worthy causes.”

Rachel was keen to join Tony and the Lord Mayor on the walk; “Tony is such a legend. When he vowed to walk 10 miles a day, every day of 2022, I was astounded as that is a huge challenge. But he has not only walked 10 miles a day, he often walks 13 or 14 miles a day so he has clocked up way more miles than he first intended! We are extremely grateful for the funds he has raised and the awareness of the Charity that he has created and it is lovely that the Lord Mayor has shown his support.”

Every donation, whatever size, helps a seriously unwell child

HELP MAKE WISHES COME TRUE

Current data suggests that 12 children and young people are diagnosed with cancer every day, and that 1,900 children under the age of 14 in the UK are diagnosed each year.

More children are diagnosed with a range of other, often rare, conditions and illnesses that are also life-threatening.

Molly Ollys is committed to helping as many of these children and their families as possible, and works hard to raise the necessary funds to be able to help those who contact us.

You can help us do this by making a donation, joining in with our fundraising events, running your own events, using Give as You Live when you are shopping, and by leaving a legacy in your will. Please visit our How you can help page to find out more.
